High Rise Narrow Aisle Pallet Racking
Set up in 1985 Winzer Wurth supply a range of over 7500 products
including fixings, furniture fittings, chemicals and tools to manufacturing
companies in the wood and metal industries.
Today turnover exceeds £10 million and they have 86 sales
consultants servicing customers daily throughout the U.K..
In 1993 it became obvious that the existing premises at Cranleigh
were being outgrown and the company purchased a 5 acre site at Godalming
and designed and built a new headquarters incorporating an office
block and a 2,500 sq. metre warehouse with land to extend in the
future. The building was completed in May 1995.
S.T.S. Storage Systems Ltd. were one of 6 companies consulted to
come up with proposals for the new warehouse which included bulk
palletised loads and a shelving system for picking orders.
S.T.S. Designed a high rise narrow aisle pallet racking system
incorporating a Boss narrow aisle lift truck operating on wire guidance
- negating the need for floor mounted guide rails to enable access
to the bottom pallets by hand pallet truck as well as being cleaner.
The system consists of 10 aisles of racking 23 metres long and
9 metres high with 8 pallet storage levels giving a total capacity
of 1280 pallet locations.
The racking was supplied in the standard Graphite Grey colour frames
with special Red colour beams to match the steelwork in the building
and the company colour scheme.
For the shelving system S.T.S. designed two banks of 3 tier high
Schäfer. Regal 4000 shelving with rack supported walkways and
staircases and a 5 metre wide two tier mezzanine floor connecting
the two sections of shelving.
Regal 4000 shelving was one of 5 systems tested independently by
the customer and found to have the strongest and least deflecting
shelves of all the systems tested.
Regal 4000 was also selected for a number of features including
the clear entry between uprights, ease of adjusting shelves without
the need for separate shelf clips and the high quality finish. The
Regal 4000 system is the only true modular system which incorporates
designed walkways, handrails and staircases.
Initially the shelving system was installed with 2 tiers and a
single tier mezzanine allowing for the system to be extended upwards
as the company expands. The mezzanine is served by an incline belt
conveyor and the picked orders reach the packers at ground level
via the conveyor.
An average of 350 orders with an average of 4.5 lines each are
despatched on a daily basis. S.T.S. obtained full local authority
approval for the 3 tier shelving system and the complete scheme
was installed in less than 3 weeks.
