High Density Pallet Storage
Healthcare Logistics Ltd are a storage and distribution company
specialising in the pharmaceutical industry with clients such as
Syntex Pharmaceuticals and Roche Products.
Products are stored mainly in palletised loads. Orders are picked
from the palletised loads and despatched on the companies own fleet
of vehicles. Some products need to be stored under secure conditions
and some under temperature controlled conditions.
The company acquired a 4,500 sq. metre building at Iver, Bucks
to expand their operation and S.T.S. were one of a number of companies
asked to put forward proposals for the new facility. High density
pallet storage with individual selectivity was required so a scheme
consisting of 8 narrow aisles 75 metres long with 6.0 metre high
Europa Rack pallet racks with 5 storage levels to utilise the full
height of the building were planned.
A Boss narrow aisle truck with low profile aisle guides was the
selected handling equipment. The bulk racking has a capacity of
some 3500 pallets with a further 400 pallet spaces in the temperature
controlled store.
To provide an order picking area that would not interfere with
the bulk pallet storage area the central racks were spaced 3.0 metres
apart and a rack supported mezzanine floor was designed at a height
of 4.0 metres enabling orders to be picked from pallets 2 high on
the ground and 2 high on the mezzanine level.
Orders picked on the mezzanine floor are picked on to a pallet
moved by hand pallet truck which is then forked down to the ground
level. S.T.S. gained full local authority approval for
the rack supported mezzanine structure.
Within the narrow aisle racks one run is fitted with stepped section
beams and chipboard shelves for storage of non palletised products.
A run of adjustable shelving runs along one wall parallel to the
pallet racks to house customers literature which also has to be
picked and dispatched.
The pedestrian walkway in this area is protected by anti-collapse
mesh fitted to the rear of the adjacent pallet rack.
